Highly postmodernist BalancingBarn by MVRDV

In an effort to acquaint the British public with modern architecture, Living Architecture commissioned the Dutch studio MVRDV to design a contemporary building in the English countryside.The result is Balancing Barn, a glistening half-cantilevered holiday home available for rentals for those brave enough. The 30 meter long structure is anchored through a concrete core and heavier materials on the supporting half and coated in gleaming sheet metal. The traditional barn form is kept but the implications are re-interpreted, while the building marvelously embodies the principles of postmodernism: twist tradition and defy context. Living here is an adventure. The visitors or guests find themselves suspended, at ground and tree level simultaneously. A swing was built under the suspended end, adding a touch of surrealism.

The building can host 8 guests, with modern and comfortable interiors, themed rooms, designed by Studio Makkini & Bey with works by British artists.
