Maison & Objet in Paris 2014, Interior Design Dream!

Maison & Objet in Paris 2014 is an interior design dream!

More than a trade show, MAISON&OBJET (held in January and September in Paris) is Europe’s largest design exhibition and is the reference event destination for the interior design industry.

It is always big news to talk about the ‘Trend’ news that emerges prior to the designer’s big reveal of their products at M&O.  As we all know, trends are greatly influenced by history, marketing, advertising, fashion, culture and so much more.  Our receptiveness to new things keeps the design world interesting and in motion.  At Maison & Objet the direction of interior design is revealed.Three of the key interior design trends to emerge center around new life and rebirth, highlighting scientific, biological influences and the all-pervading influence of nature on contemporary design.

Innovative Lighting

With many designers exploring the possibilities of solar energy, and recent advances in Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED), designers have been able to create magical and futuristic illuminations.  The image above is Blackbody’s pioneering I.Rain light installation by Thierry Gaugain.  It consists of paper-thin motion sensitive OLED discs that are activated when you walk beneath them.

Tessellation:

Interlocking shapes are featured in many new collections from furniture to textiles and accessories. Honeycomb hexagonal patterns still have a strong presence as well as interlocking chevrons in Missoni Home’s new Oakley design as seen on its pillows.

Warm Metals:

The emphasis this season is on yellowy brass finishes.  Matte or highly polished and often paired with ceramics, dark woods like walnut, or with cool marble for a luxurious look are some that I have seen.  Above is a picture of the new magazine rack by Hiromichi Konno featured at Maison & Objet this year using leather to accent this great magazine rack.
